The singer and composer Dua Lipa was born in August in London to Dukagjin Lipa and Anesa Rexha, both ethnic Albanians but who fled Kosovo. These Eastern European roots are very important and forcefully claimed by the singer, whose father boasts a past as a rock musician: the seven notes were therefore in Dua Lipa's DNA from a very young age.

During her childhood, the singer attended the Sylvia Young Theater School part-time, a dramatic art institute which she resumed attending in 2010, an important step in her training as an artist. Before becoming an international music star, Dua Lipa supported herself by working as a waitress and also as a model.

The first approach to music took place at the age of fourteen, when the teenager Dua Lipa began uploading covers of songs by Pink, Christina Aguilera and above all Nelly Furtado on her YouTube channel, one of her most important artistic references in addition to David Bowie, Police and Bob Dylan, of which listens to records thanks to his father.

In 2012 she published her first demo on the music sharing website SoundCloud and the following year she was chosen by the well-known talent scout Simon Cowell to shoot the commercial for the well-known talent show "X-Factor UK", for which she sang a cappella.

The apprenticeship bears very good fruits for the Anglo-Albanian-Kosovan singer: in 2015 , in fact, the Dua Lipa phenomenon explodes . The single Be the one is taken from the album of the same name released under the Warner Records label which, despite not taking off immediately in England, quickly climbs the charts of the most listened to singles elsewhere.

From 2015 onwards, Dua Lipa's rise is unstoppable. Loved by the very young (and not just for her songs: the European singer sets trends thanks to her eccentric and sexy outfits and her sudden hairstyling changes), the musician also begins to gain illustrious collaborations: from Sean Paul (No lie) to DJ Martin Garrix (Scared to be lonely), from the South Korean girl band of BlackPink (Kiss and make up) to our Andrea Bocelli, who duets with her in If only, a song contained in the tenor's album entitled "Si".

In 2020 Dua Lipa delighted the audience at the Ariston as one of the most anticipated superguests of that year's Festival. Despite the forced stop to live performances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the singer is experiencing a prolific phase. In fact, he released his second studio album, “Future Nostalgia“, from which successful singles were extracted such as the aforementioned Lievitating, Break my heart, Love again and Cold heart, which boasts an exceptional featuring: Elton John.

Interviews

Dua Lipa lends herself with disarming simplicity to interviews that do not focus only on her professional successes. Having recently undergone the unusual “lie detector” proposed by the well-known magazine “Vanity Fair“, the London singer ironically lent herself to the journalist's sympathetic “third degree”, answering for example a rather unusual question: “Have you ever called someone because you were drunk and alone?“.

“Yes, but friends – Dua Lipa replies seraphicly – Ithink it's worse when I fully consciously call people I shouldn't call, instead of doing it drunk and having an excuse!“. Another biting question concerns the "specific weight" that the singer attributes to the awards obtained during her career. “I don't like basing success on awards – the 26-year-old states, but also adds that – it's very nice to be appreciated for something that I'm very passionate about“.

In short, behind an apparently cold air hides a young woman who is not afraid to bare herself and who, indeed, fully claims her origins and her love for music.

Private life

Proudly fifty percent Kosovan, Dua Lipa founded the charity Sunny Hill Fundation together with her father, with the aim of helping young artists from this unfortunate but prolific land of talent by providing them with a structure in which they can practice and thus refine their skills.

The singer, together with her colleagues Bebe Rexha and Rita Ora - who share the same origins as Lipa - has done her utmost to support the other half of her sky, Albania, hit by the terrible earthquake of 2019. Her position, considered controversial by some, on the desire that a "Greater Albania" be born from the union of lands such as Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo and Greece, has sparked a rather heated controversy.

Part of public opinion was unleashed against the artist, calling her with epithets such as “nationalist” and “fascist“; Dua Lipa immediately corrected the issue, apologizing for the enormous misunderstanding created and underlining that she only wanted to encourage anyone to be proud of their roots.

Dua Lipa is also attentive to the issues of the LGBTQ community and voted in favor of Brexit. The young performer was also accused of racism due to a term used improperly in the lyrics of a cover she performed in 2014 to address people of color; Having noticed the terrible "slip", Dua Lipa immediately made amends via Twitter.

Musical influences

Dua Lipa's musical style is quite varied, despite being classifiable in the mainstream genre that has become pop. The girl includes her works in a sort of sub-genre, "dark pop", contaminated by influences from various artists who have made music great in the world over the years.

Outkast, Prince, No Doubt, but also Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have contributed to making Dua Lipa's musical background eclectic, embellished with a "hoarse-low" vocal register, a sensual tone and the creation of songs that are very different from each other.

Dua Lipa's stylistic preferences

Those who have been lucky enough to admire her in person, but also those who follow her exploits on her very active social profiles, will perhaps find it hard to believe that not only was Dua Lipa not a young woman with the dream of being a model, but that at a certain point she abandoned the glittering catwalks so as not to submit to the rigid rules of the fashion world which imposed on her a model of thinness which today the main fashion houses promise to fight.

Although the fashion chapter can be considered concluded from an exquisitely professional point of view, this has not stopped the main Italian and foreign maisons from competing for the face - and physique - of Dua Lipa for their own campaigns!

The singer, moreover, moves and wears any item of clothing with ease, from sexy dresses to sporty but chic tracksuits. The musical eclecticism clearly shines through in the style of Dua Lipa, who never misses a beat, anticipating catwalk trends and collaborating with some of the best brands around: Versace, Patrizia Pepe (testimonial since 2017), Pepe Jeans (since 2019), Calvin Klein, Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, but without forgetting low-cost brands, such as H&M, or emerging artists, who are possibly engaged in the creation of sustainable garments.

If we had to apostrophize Dua Lipa's style with just one term we could easily use the anglicism "mash-up": mix, miscellany of garments, nuance, patterns which combined give the pop star a sensual, transgressive, young elegance.

Quotes

Below are some of the most famous quotes by the artist Dua Lipa.

Happy reading!

  • "When I write music, I listen to it and listen to it over and over again, and when I make videos, I watch them over and over again. But as soon as the album comes out it no longer belongs to me, it belongs to others"
  • "Finding a good pair of jeans that flatter your body is really hard. So when you finally find them, and they go with everything, it's like winning the lottery!"
  • “I am reluctant to explain what a certain song means to me as I don't want my story to influence the experience of those who listen to it“
  • "My family and friends keep me grounded. I've also learned to moderate my social media presence and keep it manageable. Social media has always been a part of my generation, so I find it fun to post photos, write tweets, and update my profiles. But I've also received a lot of criticism for being political about causes I care about. I'm not the type to apologize, I stand by what I believe in, so sometimes I delete a certain app so that I don't feel like I have to hold back or have to be careful about what I write. Internet trolls can easily cause you anxiety."
