Gianni Versace

Gianni Versace was one of the biggest names in Italian fashion in the world, as well as the founder of the Versace fashion house. Considered one of the most innovative designers in the history of fashion, Versace has been able to combine art, culture, music and theater in his creations, giving life to a unique and recognizable aesthetic. His premature death, which occurred on 15 July 1997 at the hands of a serial killer, left an unfillable void in the international fashion scene.

The origins and beginnings

Giovanni Maria Versace, known as Gianni, was born in Reggio Calabria on 2 December 1946, following the birth of his brother Santo and anticipating that of his sister Donatella. He had his first contacts with the world of fashion as a boy, working in the atelier of his mother Francesca, a professional seamstress. From her he learned the secrets of the trade and developed his passion for art and classical culture. At the age of 14 he attended the Tommaso Campanella classical high school, without completing his studies.

In 1972, at the age of twenty-five, he moved to Milan to work as a clothing designer, creating the first collections for Genny, Complice and Callaghan. In 1975 he presented his first collection of leather clothes for Complice. On 28 March 1978 at the Palazzo della Permanente, in Milan, Gianni Versace presented the first women's collection signed with his name. The following year he began a successful collaboration with the American photographer Richard Avedon, who created his advertising campaigns until 1994.

Success and style

In the 80s and 90s, Gianni Versace achieved international success with his collections that expressed an original and bold vision of fashion. His style is characterized by the use of bright colors, animal prints, metallic elements, leather and silk. Versace is inspired by its homeland, Greek and Roman mythology, baroque, pop art, rock and cinema. His creations are worn by stars such as Madonna, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Lady Diana and many others.

Versace is also the inventor of the top models, the supermodels who become icons of beauty and fame. His muses include Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Claudia Schiffer. One of the most famous images of his career is the one from 1991 in which the five models sing Freedom by George Michael on the catwalk of his show.

Versace is not limited to fashion, but is also dedicated to theatre, ballet and opera. He designed costumes for numerous operas including Josephslegende by Richard Strauss, Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti, Dyonisos by Maurice Béjart and Capriccio by Richard Strauss. He also collaborates with directors such as Franco Zeffirelli and Robert Altman.

The assassination and the legacy

On the morning of July 15, 1997, Gianni Versace was killed in front of the gate of his villa in Miami Beach by Andrew Cunanan, a serial killer wanted for four other murders. The stylist had purchased the villa in 1992 and transformed it into a masterpiece of architecture and design. The motive for the murder has never been clarified, nor is it known whether Versace and Cunanan knew each other. Cunanan committed suicide nine days later on a boat.

Versace's death shocks the world of fashion and art, which pays homage to him with emotion and affection. His funeral took place in the Milan Cathedral, where thousands of people flocked, including many of the designer's friends and colleagues. Also present were Elton John, who sang The Wind Beneath My Wings, and Lady Diana, who died a month later in an accident in Paris.

Gianni Versace's legacy is carried on by his family, in particular by his sister Donatella, who becomes the artistic director of the fashion house. The Versace brand continues to be one of the most prestigious and influential in the international fashion scene, keeping alive the creative and innovative spirit of its founder.
